PERU SURFING  BEACHES

 PERU SURFING BEACHES

Cabo Blanco:  is widely held to feature the best left-breaking wave in Peru It has a fast and short wave that implies a "take off" and one of the best pipes. This beach is located in the north of Peru.

The waves can reach up to four meters, but normally they fluctuate between two and three meters. This beach is ideal between November and December.

Access:  Cabo Blanco lies 153 km north of the city of Piura.

Bayovar-Nonura: is a wave running long and leftwise. Surfers nicknamed this beach as "El Ferrocarril" (The Train) because of its size and strength. The waves are left and right and they measure up to three meters.

The entrance to the place where the wave is taken requires a very difficult paddle out against strong currents. The beach has swells generally during summer.

Access:  Bayóvar lies 105 km (two hours) southwest of the city of Piura.

Chicama is famous for boasting the world's longest wave. It is divided in four sections:  Each is a wave in itself, with its own character and speed.Surfers say to surf Chicama, one needs an extra pair of legs. The waves in its ideal size measure up to two meters and grow with the currents of the southeast.
Access:
Chicama lies 94 km (an hour-and-a-half) northwest of the city of Trujillo. The cove, also called Malabrigo, is reached by taking the detour at Paiján, at Kilometre 614 of the North Pan-American Highway.

La Herradura - The classic point of Lima (the horseshoe) has left waves that in their best days reach five meters. It is split into three sections, the one nearest the coast being the most tubular and the most difficult.

It is an oft-visited beach, where on a nice day there will be 100 surfers (a major additional difficulty if one takes into account each series only brings five waves). Experienced surfers only.

Access: Located just minutes from downtown Lima.

Pico Alto (High Peak). The biggest and most spectacular waves in Peru. It is a Point Break (with lefts and rights, despite the fact that rights are a lot more frequent).

It's perfect long waves can measure up to 10 meters. Not for beginners. This is a very crowded beach during the summer and is a long paddle out (the wave breaks 1 km out).

Access:
Pico Alto lies 43 km south of the city of Lima down the South Pan-American Highway
.

BONUS RECOMMENDATION:

Ica -The finest right-breaking wave in Peru.  Because of its position, the island features the only wave in Peru where right-running, tubular waves break to the west.

The water is very cold, and strong winds gust in the afternoons. Its a unique surf spot, where surfers take to the waves amidst hundreds of sea lions.

Access: The island lies 5 km west of the Paracas Peninsula. It can only be reached by boat and surfers tend to hire launches at El Chaco.
